There are a couple of things I don't have yet and baby might be here in 2 weeks or less.
Nursing bra-I bought one. It is too small and I have to send it back to exchange it. I haven't. I will use my regular bras in the meantime as long as they fit me still but I might end up with no bra. Oops. I can't do that!
Nursing clothing-I have decided I only like ONE style of nursing top and I can't find it anywhere for a reasonable price tag. In the meantime I have decided that my Target tanks and Liz Lange Maternity tanks are SO stretchy I can pull them down to nurse. I really want the pull UP type though, like the ones by Boob Design But those are $55.00!!! Outrageous!
There are also some things I have that I don't know if we'll use.
As I look back on when my now-13 year old daughter was born, I remember having all the things I have now plus MORE and how little or much I used them.
Baby bathtub-I never used this with my first baby. I would take her into the bathtub with me or alternately I would put her on the sponge from a baby bath at the bottom of the shower for a mintue while I washed myself, then I washed her, then we got out. I will likely do the same for this baby but we have a tub and Joe can use it when it's his turn to bathe baby or if she needs a quick clean up.
Bottle warmer-I don't have this now and I will not be getting one. First of all, I plan to nurse exclusively which I did not do with my first born. Second of all, I used that bottle warmer less than a week before realizing that a formula fed baby doesn't care if the milk is room-temp. This idea that the milk must be warm seems to come from the fact that breastmilk is delivered warm and that MUST be how baby likes it. But if you think about it, babies who are never breastfed don't know or care. And in the instance that I do pump and bottle feed, I will warm the bottle in a bowl of hot water. It is faster.
Wipes warmer-I have never owned one of these and I likely never will. I can understand if you live in a freezing cold climate and your baby is born in winter but even THEN, you can warm a wipe in your hand in a jiffy. My first was born on May 30th and my second is due June 27th. My May baby never minded the cool wipes and this baby likely won't either, especially considering it's going to be 100 degrees out.
Mini Crib-I did NOT have this when my first was born but I did have a cradle that she slept in at night until she could roll over. During the day, she slept either in her play pen or her crib. We got a mini crib at a neighbor's yard sale a few months ago and got a great price. The mattress has two depth levels and I feel comfortable using it until she can pull herself up or is otherwise too active. The reason we decided to buy this although we already have a standard size convertible crib is because of portability. We opted NOT to get a pack-n-play or other play pen or a cradle or bassinet and instead use this in our bedroom, throughout the house and for travel to gramma's houses and whatnot. The mini crib has the option to roll on casters (which we need to buy and will be doing this weekend) which makes it easy to move from room to room. Most importantly, we want a safe place for baby to be while I cook dinner or clean so she can be near me but the pets leave her alone while still being able to get familiar with her. That is of utmost importance to our family-that pets and baby get along and love eachother.
Changing table-I did not have a changing table with my first and I do not have one now. What I DO have is a changing pad that sits atop baby's dresser. Since we are cloth diapering, her cloth diapers are stored just beneath the changing pad in the top dresser drawers for ease of use. Wipes are there as well. With my first, diapers were kept in a diaper stacker made for me by my grandma (that same one is now housing spare cloth prefolds, actually). Wipes were stored in my bedroom and I changed her on a receiving blanket on my bed or floor usually. This worked perfectly fine, was VERY convenient and we'll likely do the same thing half the time at home, especially while she is still in her mini-crib in our bedroom-again, until she begins to roll over (or so).
I'm confident that of all the baby items we have, we have plenty. I am also certain that we have more than we need, as every parent tends to have with a new baby. I can't see needing anything we don't have and that is especially true because I am very resourceful. I would sooner find a different way to do something than go buy a needless item or something I may only use for 2 months.
We decided to skip the baby swing but ended up being offered one by my brother which is awesome! I wasn't going to spend the money on it because I find it just as easy to carry or wear baby around most of the time but since we're getting one donated to us, heck yeah! I'm SURE we'll use it, too. A swing is one of those things that you don't need but if you have one, you're not going to ignore it. It definitely serves a purpose and we're happy to have it.
